Acceptable Behavior

As long as you use common sense and become familiar with the acceptable behavior section, your time working at the Whittemore Library will be problem free.

Breaks

Employees working a shift of four or more consecutive hours are entitled to a 15-minute break.

  • Since desk coverage is required at all times, the department supervisor should approve breaks.
  • Students must inform the department supervisor when leaving the desk.
  • Employees should not have food in the public service areas or near computer terminals. Any drinks should be placed where they are not visible to patrons, and should not be placed near the computers.

Dress Code

The Library does not have a formal dress code, but it is important to maintain a professional appearance, particularly in the public service areas.

  • It is expected that employees report to work dressed appropriately. Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Clothing that is excessively torn or revealing is not suitable.

Studying

Your first priority is to perform the tasks for which you were hired.

  • For the public services areas the main priority is to assist patrons who need help.
  • At times when your assistance is not needed or if there are no other tasks to be completed, Student Assistants are permitted to do homework or study during working hours.
  • This is with the understanding that you will put aside your schoolwork when your help is needed. You should also make sure to pay attention to people approaching the desk.
  • Students are asked to keep their school materials neat and not spread them across the workspace.
  • Students must remain in their assigned area and may not move to another table to study during working hours.
  • Students may not leave their posts to access the computers for personal use.
