Course Reserves

Course Reserves are books, DVDs, articles, or other materials a professor selects to make available in the library or in the class's Canvas site for their students to use. They might be required readings, or just recommended.

  • Physical reserve materials, like books or DVDs, can looked up online using the Minuteman Catalog search.
    • These items are kept at the Access Services Desk and may be borrowed if you have a valid library card.
    • These tend to be 2-hour loans that are to be used in the library only, and fines can accrue if you do not return them on time. If an item is in high demand, it may not be possible to renew it immediately (i.e., have it out two times in a row).
  • e-Reserves, such as articles and book chapters, are uploaded to Canvas, allowing you to access them from anywhere.
  • Unless they've said so explicitly, or it says so in your course syllabus or Canvas class site, your professor probably hasn't put your course's required textbook on Reserve (sorry).

Employment at the Library

Student Assistant Positions at the library are available generally at the start of the Fall and Spring semesters.

Available Student Assistant openings will be posted on the FSU Handshake Platform.

Apply for employment at the library via this application form.

Study Rooms

The Whittemore Library has NINE study rooms available for students to use.

  • SEVEN individual study rooms
    • G05 on the Ground Level, which cannot be reserved and will remain a 'first-come, first-serve' room.
    • SIX other individual study rooms are on the G and UM levels - find and reserve them via our interactive maps.
  • TWO group study rooms

Research Help

Stop by and get help with library research and citation questions at the Research & Learning Walk-Up Help Desk on the Upper Mezzanine (on the opposite side from the Curriculum Library). You can also schedule in-person appointments.

But if you can't make it to the Library - or even to campus, in person - there are several other ways to get your questions answered:

  • e-mail
  • phone
  • chat services (chat widget tab to start a chat is on the lower right of every library page)
  • chat service co-op coverage during the hours that we are not open
  • scheduled appointments (in-person or Zoom):
  • online research help guides

Media Scapes

Media Scapes are not separate rooms, and cannot be reserved, but they are still useful for group project work or when you want to project onto a larger screen.

Workshops

Our workshop offerings are based on what students have requested most, such as how to use RamSearch, our Discovery Tool, and Zotero, the free citation app. On 'Workshop Wednesdays' we hold an early afternoon and then an early evening workshop, and we can offer both in-person and Zoom versions.

This coming Fall semester 2024, we're adding a workshop on how to use popular AI-based apps to speed-up your literature review searches! As always, see our scheduled Workshops on our Events page.

Board Games

We have a collection of board and card games, including classic and popular word and strategy games. Search the Minuteman Catalog by typing FSU Games into the search box to see our collection listed.  Request and check these out at the Access Services Desk.

Technological Loaners

Four iPad tablets, four smart pens, and various cables and adapters for charging / connecting tablets and laptops to other devices are part of our Reserves collection, available to be checked out at the Access Services Desk if you have a valid FSU ID.
