Checking on the Reliability of Online Information

Successfully navigating the quagmire of online information sources

Websites: You be the Judge

We have all heard the jokes - "I read it on the Internet, it must be true!".  These days, most people know that anyone can post information on the Internet.  Just who verifies the facts posted on Internet websites?  You, the researcher, have to verify that the information presented is trustworthy.  This is not always easy.  Use the criteria below to help you critically review the source before you rely on its information.

If you have questions about verifying information on the Internet, please stop by, call (508-626-4654) or email the reference staff.

Tools for Website Evaluation

When you are looking at a potential website, there are some test criteria that can help you evaluate the site.  Apply one, or both, of these tests, and see how the site measures up.  Any red flags? If in doubt, stop by, call (508-626-4654) or email the reference staff.  We have a lot of experience evaluating all kinds of resources!
