Policies of the Henry Whittemore Library

Circulation Policy

All patrons from the Minuteman Library Network libraries can borrow items from the Main collection or the McNaughton browsing collection. Curriculum Library items can only be borrowed with the approval of the Curriculum Library staff. Anyone can use the materials within the library.

Mass Bay students living on campus have the same borrowing privileges as Minuteman Library Network patrons. To make a library card, please visit the front desk or email circulation@framingham.edu. The card will expire when the student is no longer living on campus.

All full-time and part-time Framingham State University students have borrowing privileges at the Whittemore Library.  Day and evening students will have barcodes printed on the back of their student IDs.  Borrowing privileges will expire when the student is no longer enrolled at the university.

Alumni may obtain free borrowing privileges upon request.  There is a limit of two curriculum items in total that may be checked-out to the patron.  There is no limit on the number of general collection items that may be checked out.  There will be no expiration of alumni privileges unless the curriculum library restriction is not respected.

Faculty, Staff, and Administrators of the University will receive a barcoded Minuteman Library Network card upon request.

Distance and online learners can contact circulation@framingham.edu with their name, address, phone number, email, year of graduation and student ID number. Once the information is received and a record is made, the library barcode number will be emailed to the patron.

Nursing students at Framingham Union Hospital taking courses within the Framingham State University nursing department are entitled to borrow materials while they are enrolled in this program.

Students who are currently enrolled at any of the Massachusetts public institutions of higher education may borrow from the library through the Walk-in Interlibrary Loan (W.I.L.L.) program.  A validated student ID showing proof of enrollment must be presented in order to check out materials.

Confidentiality of library record

In accordance with the recommendation of the Office of Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association, registration and circulation records at Whittemore Library are confidential.  Library registration includes information required of the patrons in order for them to borrow materials.  Circulation records include any information that identifies the patron as borrowing particular materials.  The library staff will not release any of the information contained in the registration or circulation records except by formal state or federal judicial order.  Authorized library staff may use the above-mentioned records in order to perform routine duties.

Borrowing Policy

With the exception of reference materials, periodicals, special collections, and reserves, all other library materials are available to circulate. The lending periods are:

  • Current students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Minuteman card holders - 3 weeks

A validated Framingham State ID or a faculty/staff/alumni Minuteman card must be presented in order to borrow materials. The registration and/or validation of patrons' cards is done at the Circulation desk the first time the card is used.  Items may be renewed twice provided they have not been requested.  Renewal may be done in person, by telephone or in the "My Account" area of the library catalog.  It is the borrowers' responsibility to renew items before the due date. Interlibrary loan items obtained from outside of the network have a lending period set by the owning library. ILL items can only be renewed by contacting the ILL coordinator before the due date.

Although the Whittemore Library is now fine free for overdue books, if an item is lost or damaged, a replacement fee of up to $50.00 is still charged.

It is the responsibility of patrons to retrieve their own materials from the shelves.  Library staff will provide help in locating items if needed, but they will not collect materials from the shelves for patrons.
